Biomedical and Tissue Engineering Research Group

Overview of Group Research Activities

The philosophy of the Biomedical and Tissue Engineering Research Group is to bridge the gap between basic science research and its clinical application in the field of bone induction and dental biomaterials. Members of this research group come from various disciplines and specialties, including orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery; many members of the group have earned an international reputation. The group is supported by up-to-date laboratory and operative equipment, as well as extensive human resources.

The principal research focuses are as follows:

  • Growth factors regulating osteogenesis
  • Bone tissue engineering with stem cells
  • Bone induction using Chinese Medicine
  • Jaw reconstruction with microvascular prefabricated flaps
  • Enamel and dentine bonding
  • Biodegradation of the resin dentine bond
  • Distraction osteogenesis of cranio-maxillofacial region
  • Dental biomaterials and tissue engineered scaffolds
  • 3-dimensional facial imaging and cephalometry
  • Healing of dental implants with nano-coating
  • Oral cancer

Our vision is as follows:

To be Asia's leading research group in biomedical and tissue engineering of the oral and maxillofacial region

Action Plan for 2008-2012:

  1. To encourage and assist our members to integrate into the new HKU Strategic research themes
  2. To co-organize at least one regional or international research conference with other Faculties of HKU, other universities in HK, China and the World
  3. To appoint an international reputable biomedical engineering advisor to assist members in refining the research grants and facilitate international exchanges
  4. To foster research in multi-disciplinary teams and facilitate collaborative grant applications among members and with other research groups
  5. To encourage members to apply CERG and external grants and assist them to refine the grant proposals
  6. To develop a research mentoring scheme for junior researchers in our group
