Dr. Seneviratne Jayarathne (2006 PhD student)

  • was awarded "IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award" at the International Association for Dental Research Scientific Meeting, Toronto, Canada, July 2008. His supervisor is Professor L.P. Samaranayake.

Dr Lu Qian (2006 PhD student)

  • was presented with an "Outstanding Poster Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for the presentation titled "Effect of P. gingivalis LPS on gene expression profiles in gingival epithelium" co-authored with Professor LJ Jin, Professor LP Samaranayake and Dr RP Darveau.

Dr. Hannah Daile P Chua (PhD student)

  • awarded the "Oral Abstract Scientific Presentation Award" for her presentation titled "Cleft distraction versus orthognathic surgery: which one causes more distress?" at the 89th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, held in conjunction with the Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, in November 2007. Her supervisors are Professor L.K. Cheung, Professor N. Samman, Dr. M. Bendeus, Dr. T. Whitehill and Dr. S.M.Y. Ho.

Dr. Parahitiyawa N. Bandara (PhD student)

  • awarded the "Outstanding Poster Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for his presentation titled "Periodontitis associated occult bacteraemia detected by 16S rRNA gene sequencing" co-authored with Professor L.P. Samaranayake, Professor L.J. Jin, Dr. W.K. Leung and Dr. W.C. Yam.

Dr. Seneviratne Jayarathne (2006 PhD student)

  • awarded the Hiroshima University Award at the Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry, Japan, 6-7 October 2007, for the presentation "Current developments in Candida biofilm proteomics, cellular imaging, and drug resistance". His supervisors are Dr. Yu Wang, Professor Li-jian Jin, and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake.

Ms Pui-sze Chan (MPhil student)

  • awarded the Best Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine Award, Second Prize, and also named the 2007 Postgraduate Symposium Session Champion at the 2007 Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Eddie Wang Symposium on Integrated Chinese & Western Medicine Postgraduate Presentation Session, on 2 November 2007. The title of her winning presentation was "The adjunctive use of Chinese Medicine in non-surgical periodontal therapy", by TPS Chan, JCS Ho, KY Zee, EF Corbet, and WK Leung. Her supervisors are Dr W Keung Leung (from Nov 2006) and Dr Kwan-yat Zee (Sept 2005 - Oct 2006).

2006

Dr. Chua, Hannah Daile P. (PhD student)

  • awarded the "Best Oral Presentation" on the presentation "Long-term Stability of Cleft Distraction Osteogenesis versus Orthognathic Surgery" at the 7th Asian Congress on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hong Kong, November 2006. Her supervisors are Professor L.K. Cheung, Professor N. Samman, Dr. M. Bendeus, Dr. T. Whitehill and Dr. S.M.Y. Ho.

Dr. Tan Hai-ping (PhD student)

  • awarded the '2006 IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award' for her research "Prevention and arrest of root caries in institutionalized elders" at the 84th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, Brisbane, Australia June 2006.

  • awarded the 'Procter & Gamble Junior Investigator Award (First Prize for the best presentation)' at the 84th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, Brisbane, Australia June 2006. for her research with Professor Edward Lo, Dr. Luo Yan, Dr. John Dyson and Dr. Esmonde Corbet on "A randomized controlled trial on root caries in institutionalized elders"


2005

Zhang Qian (PhD Student)

  • Awarded for the Arthur Wuehrmann Prize of 2004. This award was given each year by the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology for the best manuscript published the radiology section of the journal of "Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology & Endodontics".

Dr. Dai Juan (PhD Student)

  • awarded the Travel Award at the 20th International Association for Dental Research Annual Meeting (South-East Asia Division), Malacca, Malaysia.


2004

Lu, Maggie (PhD student)

  • Awards for Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student, set up by the Graduate School, The University of Hong Kong, to give due recognition to research postgraduate students who have submitted a thesis of exceptional quality and have demonstrated outstanding performance in other academic aspects on an annual basis.

Tang Guo Hua (PhD student)

  • The Houston Award of the best paper - oral presentation awarded at the 79th European Orthodontic Society Conference, Prague

Tang Gao Yan (PhD Student)

  • Award in Best Paper in Microbiology at the 18th International Association for Dental Research Annual Meeting (South East Asian Division), Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
