Welcome to Research Postgraduate Programmes
Introduction
The Faculty of Dentistry is the sole institution in Hong Kong dedicated
to training dental undergraduates and postgraduates. It aspires to become
Asia's leading dental faculty, through innovative and cutting-edge research
and world-class postgraduate training (http://www.hku.hk/dental/english/index.html).
Postgraduate Degree Programmes
The Faculty of Dentistry offers MPhil and PhD programmes in both full-time
and part-time modes. For full-time students, the MPhil is a 2-year programme
and the PhD is a 4-year programme; part-time courses will generally take
twice as long. MPhil students whose first-year performance is graded as
excellent may elect to switch to a PhD programme on the recommendation
of the supervisor.
Entry Requirements
The University of Hong Kong, being a world-famous research-led university
that uses English as its medium of instruction, demands that applicants
for research postgraduate (RPG) programmes be proficient in English (TOEFL
paper-based score of not less than 550 or computer-based score of not
less than 213) and also display excellent academic standards in their
previous undergraduate and postgraduate (master degree for PhD application)
courses.
Application Procedure
Applicants should first carefully study the postgraduate prospectus of
the Faculty of Dentistry (http://www.facdenthk.org/postgraduate_prospectus.htm)
and identify any specialty research areas or faculty research groups that
interest them. They should then contact the appropriate RPG advisor of
the Specialty Disciplines or Convenor of Faculty Research Group in order
to design a research proposal jointly with a recommended research supervisor.
The completed application form should be submitted together with the research
proposal to the Graduate School of The University of Hong Kong for consideration
by the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee, who will place approved applicants
in the waiting list for admission ( http://www.hku.hk/gradsch/web/apply/index.htm).
After the University has allocated a research student
quota to the Faculty, around March each year, applicants in the waiting
list will be prioritised and an offer for admission will be sent to the
selected applicants. Full-time research students will be eligible to apply
for a postgraduate studentship as a form of scholarship to support their
cost of living in Hong Kong during their study. Postgraduate studentships
will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and the need for financial
support.
Course Enrolment
Enrolment for RPG courses starts from 1 July every year and is not limited
to dental graduates. University graduates of any discipline are welcome
to contact any of the research group convenors or specialty area advisors
listed below to formulate a research proposal in support of their applications.
We look forward to answering your enquiries and receiving your application.
