Ms. Winnie Wing Shan Choi, Postgraduate student of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been awarded "Outstanding Oral Abstract Presentation Award" in the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons 90th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions & Exhibition in conjunction with the Chinese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Seattle, USA, September 11-15, 2008. Her award abstract title is "The Effect of Tranexamic Acid on Blood Loss during Orthognathic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial". The research HKU colleagues involved are: Dr Wing Shan CHOI, Dr Michael G. IRWIN, Head of Department of Anaesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, HKU & Professor Nabil Samman, academic staff of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, HKU. Professor Edward Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) was awarded a grant of HK$1.33 million by the SK Yee Medical Foundation in October 2008, to provide a community dental service for various disadvantaged groups in Hong Kong. The other project members are Dr John Dyson (Associate Professor in Oral Rehabilitation) and Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry). Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) received a HK$300,000 grant from the HKSAR Health Care and Promotion Fund under the Seed Funding Scheme in October 2008, to run an outreach programme providing preventive dental care services to kindergarten children. The other project member is Professor Edward Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health). The following staff members were elected to various posts in the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in July 2008: Professor Lakshman Samaranayake, Chair, IADR Awards Review Committee, and President, Oral Medicine and Pathology Scientific Group; Professor Anne McMillan, Member, IADR Constitution Committee; Professor Colman McGrath, Councilor, Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Scientific Group. In addition, Professor Li-jian Jin was recently appointed as Councilor, IADR South-East Asia Division. Mr Bernard Liang (BDS Group 5.5) was the first runner-up (2nd place) in the Dentsply Student Table Clinician Competition at the 19th Annual Meeting of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education, held in October 2008 in Manila, Philippines. Dr Li-wu Zheng, Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been awarded CHF114,200 (about HK$835,000) by the AO Research Fund of the AO Foundation (Switzerland) to conduct the research project "Shall We Rewrite the Distraction Protocol for Continuous Distraction Osteogenesis?" His co-researcher is Professor Lim-kwong Cheung, Chair Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Professor Lim-kwong Cheung, Chair Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Dentistry, a new peer-reviewed open access journal (website, <www.hindawi.com/journals/ijd>). Dr Kevin HK Yip (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) has been presented with a 2008 Listerine Research Award by Johnson and Johnson to conduct a research project titled 'The role of cariogenic bacteria of oral biofilm in coronary heart disease' Co-holders of this US$31,820 award are co-researchers Professor Herbert HP Fang, Department of Civil Engineering, HKU Faculty of Engineering; Professor Hui Chen, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontics, School of Stomatology, Zhejiang University; and Professor Jianhua Zhu, Department of Internal Cardiology, Zhejiang University. Mr Sam Hui (staff of Dental Media Unit), who has been studying part-time on multi-media design in a master degree course of Middlesex University, has completed a research project on e-learning for post-graduate dental continuing education under the supervision of Mr Raymond Fok (Senior Lecturer and Program Leader, Middlesex University) and Professor L.K. Cheung (Professor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery). Mr Hui has been awarded distinction for his Master of Art degree on "Work Based Learning Studies (Multimedia Design and Project Management)". He was also subsequently awarded with the "Gerry Fowler Prize for Excellence" for his outstanding achievement. Professor Lim-kwong Cheung (Professor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery), Dr Rory Watt (Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences), Dr Kevin Yip (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) and Dr Katherine Leung (Assistant Professor in Oral Rehabilitation) won GRF 2008-2009 awards from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council in July 2008. Dr Jayampath Seneviratne (2006 PhD student) was awarded "IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award" at the International Association for Dental Research Scientific Meeting, Toronto, Canada, July 2008. His supervisor is Professor L.P. Samaranayake. Professor Urban Hägg, (Chair Professor in Orthodontics), and co-investigators Dr Ricky Wong (Associate Professor in Orthodontics), Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Dean and Chair Professor in Microbiology), Dr Richard Kao (Assistant Professor in Microbiology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), and Dr Michelle Yuen (Master of Orthodontics student) are recipients of one of the "2008 IADR/GSK Innovation in Oral Care Award" (US$75,000) for the research on "A Natural Edible Agent for Reduction of Oral Biofilm" which recognizes innovative technologies that can be used routinely by the public to maintain and improve oral health and quality of life. The award was presented at the International Association of Dental Research Scientific Meeting, Toronto, Canada in July 2008. Dr May CM Wong (Associate Professor in Dental Public Health) has been appointed as an Associate Editor of the journal Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. Professor Edward CM Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dental Research, the official journal of the International Association for Dental Research. Professor Lim-kwong Cheung and Dr Qian-feng Li won Outstanding Oral Presentation Awards at The University of Hong Kong and Wuhan University Inaugural Conjoint Dental Scientific Meeting, 10-11 May 2008, Dongguan, China. Dr Chun-hung Chu and Dr Qian Lu won Outstanding Poster Presentation Awards at The University of Hong Kong and Wuhan University Inaugural Conjoint Dental Scientific Meeting, 10-11 May 2008, Dongguan, China. Professor Tak-wah Chow (Professor in Family Dentistry) and Mr Raymond TC Leung (Audiovisual Officer) were honoured by The University of Hong Kong for 25 and 35 years of service, respectively, at the HKU Long Service Awards Ceremony on 6 May 2008. Professor Urban Hägg (Chair Professor of Orthodontics) was elected as Vice President of the Asian-Pacific Orthodontic Society at the 6th Asian-Pacific Orthodontic Conference held in Bangkok, Tahiland, in March 2008. Dr Ricky Wong (Associate Professor in Orthodontics) has been awarded the Faculty Research Output Prize 2008 in recognition of research excellence in the form of an article co-authored with Professor Bakr Rabie (Professor in Orthodontics) titled "Effect of puerarin on bone formation", which was published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage in 2007. Professor Urban Hägg, Chair in Orthodontics, has successfully completed the admission requirements, and been admitted at a regular member of Edward H Angle Society of Orthodontists (USA) in March 2008. Dr Ricky Wong, Associate Professor in Orthodontics, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Consumer Health Informatics. Prizes awarded in 2007 Dr Roger Zwahlen (Associate Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) received a Merit Award in September 2007 from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in recognition of his clinical and scientific contributions to the formation of the dental proceation. Professor Edward CM Lo, Professor in Dental Public Health, has received the HKU Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award 2006-07. Professor Li-jian Jin, Professor in Periodontology, was elected as a Science Committee Member of the FDI World Dental Federation by the FDI General Assembly during its annual meeting in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on 26 October 2007. Dr Ricky Wong, Associate Professor in Orthodontics, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Open Orthopaedics Journal. Dr Hannah Daile P Chua (PhD student) was presented with an "Oral Abstract Scientific Presentation Award" for her presentation titled "Cleft distraction versus orthognathic surgery: which one causes more distress?" at the 89th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, held in conjunction with the Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, in November 2007. Her co-authors are Professor LK Cheung and Dr SMY Ho. Dr Andrew TC Ow (2006 MDS in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery student) was presented with an "Outstanding Oral Presentation Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for his presentation titled "Bilateral sagittal split osteotomies (BSSO) versus mandibular distraction osteogenesis: which is better?", co-authored with Professor LK Cheung. Dr Li-wu Zheng (Post-doctoral Fellow in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) was presented with an "Outstanding Oral Presentation Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for his presentation titled "Shall we rewrite the distraction protocol for continuous distraction osteogenesis?", co-authored with Dr L Ma and Professor LK Cheung. Dr Margareta Bendeus Hagg (Part-time clinical lecturer) was presented with an "Outstanding Poster Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidenced-based Advanced Dentistry. 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for her presentation titled "Stepwise advancement versus maximum jumping with headgear activator", co-authored with Dr MC Wey (M.Orth 2005) and Professor U Hagg. Dr Parahitiyawa N Bandara (PhD student) was presented with an "Outstanding Poster Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for his presentation titled "Periodontitis associated occult bacteraemia detected by 16S rRNA gene sequencing", co-authored with Professor LP Samaranayake, Professor LJ Jin, Dr WK Leung and Dr WC Yam. Dr Ruby MS Wong (Adv Dip in Periodontology student) was presented with an "Outstanding Poster Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for her presentation titled "Non-surgical periodontal therapy and oral health-related quality of life", co-authored with Dr SKS Ng, Professor EF Corbet and Dr WK Leung. Dr Lu Qian (2006 PhD student) was presented with an "Outstanding Poster Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for the presentation titled "Effect of P. gingivalis LPS on gene expression profiles in gingival epithelium" co-authored with Professor LJ Jin, Professor LP Samaranayake and Dr RP Darveau. Dr Tony CK Lee (Adv Dip in Orthodontics student) was presented with an "Outstanding Poster Award" at the Second International Conference on Evidence-based Advanced Dentistry, 16-19 November 2007, Hong Kong, for his presentation titled "Patients' perceptions regarding microimplant as anchorage in orthodontics", co-authored with his supervisor Professor Bakr Rabie, Dr Ricky Wong and Dr Colman McGrath. Dr Ricky Wong, Associate Professor in Orthodontics, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Open Anthropology Journal. Dr Wilson Lee (Adv Dip in Orthodontics student) was awarded the Gold Medal for best performance in the Orthodontics examination RCSEd held in Hong Kong. Dr Frederick Chu, Assistant Dean for External Relations, has been selected as one of Hong Kong's "Ten Outstanding Young Persons". Dr Chu was selected for the award in recognition of his professional contributions to the community and is the first ever HKU dental graduate to win this accolade since the competition was begun in 1970 by the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong (for photos and details, see <http://toyp.jcihk.org>). Dr Jayampath Seneviratne (PhD student) won the Hiroshima University Award at the Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry, Japan, 6-7 October 2007, for the presentation "Current developments in Candida biofilm proteomics, cellular imaging, and drug resistance". His supervisors are Dr Yu Wang, Professor Li-jian Jin, and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake. Dr Daisy You (MDS student) won the Best Paper Award in the category of Cariology and Mineralized Tissues at the 21st Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research Southeast Asian Division, which was held in Bali, Indonesia, in September 2007. Her paper, co-authored with Dr CH Chu and Professor Edward Lo, was titled "Precision of clinical diagnosis of fissure caries by different methods". Mr Dustin Wai (BDS V student) won the third prize in the Student Prevention Table Clinician Programme, organised jointly by the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE) and GC Dental Asia at the 18th SEADDE Scientific Meeting in Bali, Indonesia, in September 2007. He presented the Community Health Project "Oral health care for the physically handicapped", conducted by student Group 5.1. Dr Gary Cheung, Associate Professor in Endodontics, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of Dental Tribune International, which publishes an international magazine of endodontics, Roots. Dr Cynthia Yiu, Associate Professor in Paediatric Dentistry, has been awarded the Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student Award for the academic year 2005-2006. The prize is awarded by the Graduate School, The University of Hong Kong. Dr Cynthia Yiu, Associate Professor in Paediatric Dentistry, has been awarded the Research Output Prize 2006 from the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong in recognition of her research achievements. Dr Ricky Wong, Associate Professor of Orthodontics, was invited to become Member of the Editorial Board of Chinese Medicine, starting from November 2007. Ms Pui-sze Chan (MPhil student) was awarded the Best Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine Award, Second Prize, and also named the 2007 Postgraduate Symposium Session Champion at the 2007 Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Eddie Wang Symposium on Integrated Chinese & Western Medicine Postgraduate Presentation Session, on 2 November 2007. The title of her winning presentation was "The adjunctive use of Chinese Medicine in non-surgical periodontal therapy", by TPS Chan, JCS Ho, KY Zee, EF Corbet, and WK Leung. Her supervisors are Dr W Keung Leung (from Nov 2006) and Dr Kwan-yat Zee (Sept 2005 - Oct 2006). Dr Susan Bridges, Assistant Professor in Dental Education and E-Learning, has been selected by the editors of International Journal of Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations as the winner of the International Award for Excellence for the article "Investigating multiculturalism as policy and practice in the middle years of schooling: an Australian study". Professor Li-jian Jin, Professor in Periodontology, together with three collaborators in the USA and UK, has been awarded a grant for US$800,000 from the United States National Institutes of Health to conduct a 4-year study on bacterial modulation during the periodontal innate host response. The principal investigator is Professor RP Darveau, Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Research Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. Professor Edward CM Lo, Dr May CM Wong, and Dr Cynthia KY Yiu were awarded Competitive Earmarked Research Grants (2007-2008) by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council in June 2007, to conduct research projects on two dental caries treatments, oral health trends from childhood to early adulthood, and the resin-dentine interface in restored teeth, respectively. Professor Lakshman Samaranayake, Dean and Chair Professor in Microbiology, was bestowed with Honorary Membership to the American Dental Association in June 2007. Honorary Membership is "awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the oral health of the public and the advancement of the art and science of dentistry". Professor Nabil Samman, Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was inducted as President of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons at the 18th International Congress on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Bangalore in November 2007. Professor Nabil Samman was bestowed with Honorary Fellowship of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons at the association's 89th Annual Meeting in Hawaii in October 2007. Professor Nabil Samman was awarded an Honorary Higher Doctorate by the Prince of Songkla University, Thailand and received the degree from HRH Princess Chulabhorn of Thailand in September 2007. Professor Urban Hagg, Chair Professor in Orthodontics, has been invited to become a member of the Angle Society, North Atlantic Component. Professor Tak-wah Chow, Professor in Family Dentistry, Dr Frederick Chu, Associate Professor in Family Dentistry, and Dr John Chai, Honorary Lecturer at the Faculty and Professor Emeritus of Northwestern University, Illinois, USA, were among the authors of the Best Article of 2006 published in the International Journal of Prosthodontics. Their research, on the relationships between nutritional and dental states among geriatric patients, was conducted in collaboration with the Tung Wah Eastern Hospital and appeared in the May/June 2006 issue of the journal. Professor Anne McMillan, Chair Professor of Oral Rehabilitation, was appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, starting from 1 January 2007. Dr Ricky Wong, Assistant Professor in Orthodontics, has been invited to join the editorial board of the Open Biomedical Engineering Journal--a new online, open-access peer-reviewed journal (www.bentham.org/open/index.htm) that publishes original research articles related to biomedical studies using tools of the physical sciences.
